About IIT-JEE - JEE Mains and JEE Advance Exam
The Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) serves as India’s most esteemed engineering entrance examination, facilitating admission into government engineering colleges such as the Indian Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Technology. Candidates seeking to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering are eligible to apply through IIT-JEE. Additionally, numerous reputable and renowned private engineering colleges also consider applicants based on their performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and JEE Advanced examinations, which are conducted nationally.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) conducts the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in two phases: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Engineering aspirants who qualify for JEE Main with a rank between 50,000 and 60,000 are invited to appear for JEE Advanced examinations.
JEE Mains Exam
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year, adhering to the guidelines issued by the board of IITs institutions. The first JEE Main examination is held in the last week of December to the first week of January, while the second examination is conducted in the last week of March to the second week of April.
Students interested in pursuing a career in engineering may choose to write both examinations and select the highest score, percentile, or rank obtained from the two. If an individual has already determined their score as the best possible, they may opt to skip one examination, either the first or second.
JEE Mains exam is held for for students who have either passed or appearing for class 12 with their subjects as physics, chemistry and maths.
- JEE Main Eligibility (for NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs):
- There’s no specific percentage requirement to appear for JEE Main.
- However, to be eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs based on your JEE Main rank, you need a minimum of 75% in your Class 12 (or equivalent) board exam.
- For SC/ST candidates, this requirement is 65%.
- You must also be in the top 20 percentile of your board exam.
JEE Advanced
For JEE Advanced admission to IITs, a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (or equivalent) is required for General category candidates, while SC/ST/PwD candidates need 65%, and you must also be in the top 20 percentile of your board exam.
- JEE Advanced Eligibility (for IITs):
- To be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, there is no specific percentage requirement.
- However, to be eligible for admission to an IIT based on your JEE Advanced rank, you need a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in your Class 12 (or equivalent) board exam.
- For SC/ST/PwD candidates, this requirement is 65%.
- You must also be in the top 20 percentile of your board exam.
- Calculation of Aggregate Marks:
- The aggregate marks are calculated based on the scores in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, a language subject, and any one other subject.
- If marks in a subject are not out of 100, they will be scaled to a total of 500.
- Key Points to Remember:
- The 75% (or 65% for reserved categories) criteria is for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs, not just to appear for the exams.
- The percentile calculation is done based on the successful candidates in your respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.
